About The Artist
The making of art is a holy process...
I trust the process of dipping brush into color, touching the white canvas knowing that a new creation will emerge. Creation, for me, involves expression, craft and inspiration. I draw from myself, being fully present and alive. The experience of thirty years of learning about color, composition, rhythm the craft has formed my craft. The making of art is a holy process that involves my collaboration with the Divine Spirit within so that art will touch others and awaken them to their own Muse.
I gather inspiration from Giotto, Kandinsky, Gauguin, Chagall, Matisse and Kollwitz. My philosophy of art is influenced deeply by Hans Hofmann’s teachings in Provincetown and my explorations in Italy.
I delight in using color, form, and rhythm to bring energy and resolve tension as I render the landscapes of Cape Cod, create abstracts of the inner landscape, and form figures within a landscape. My paintings are a “landscape of the imagination” beckoning viewers to sense their own imagination.
Love of jazz permeates my soul. I filled a 2008 Calendar with images to celebrate twelve Great Ladies of Jazz, painting them as I responded with joy to their music: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and others. The portraits of these women capture the soul of their gift and their struggle as African-American women. The paradox of their legacy is beauty in the midst of pain. Joy and struggle, extremes touch each other.
In the book Walking with Grief: A Healing Journey I illustrated with 21 paintings Nanette Geertz’s prose poem on loss and the healing process. Walking with Grief can be ordered through this website.
